Choose the pack from the load—not the marketing label.
Pack Lab models the actual trip: gear weight, food, water, packed-volume uncertainty, rigid items, compression, reserve space, suspension class, and load placement. It returns a defensible capacity range and current pack-class comparisons instead of a one-question size quiz.
AUDITABLE MODEL
What the recommendation includes
- starting weight, base weight, consumables, and worn weight;
- low/high packed-volume range and packing-efficiency assumptions;
- capacity and suspension class candidates;
- item-by-item recipe and suggested load placement;
- editable measurements and a downloadable JSON loadout.
Starter item values are labeled archetypes. Purchase-grade precision comes from replacing them with measurements of your exact gear.

04 · INDEPENDENT GEAR RECOMMENDATIONS
The approved shelf
The shelf is intentionally small. Approved products have a defined use case, a stated limitation, a dated editorial review, and multiple purchase paths when practical. Research-backed picks are not represented as hands-on field tests unless they have actually been tested. Reports can also generate clearly labeled retailer searches for a trip-specific need that has not yet been approved as a named product.

How a product gets recommended
- The trip creates a need. A report might call for a line-counter reel, a high-back fishing PFD, or a compact backcountry rod.
- An approved product is preferred. The catalog matches the use case, method, species, and environment.
- An unapproved need stays transparent. The site can generate current retailer searches without pretending one unreviewed model has earned a Rodfather endorsement.
- Field guides do the deeper work. Comparisons explain performance, tradeoffs, and who should skip each option.

Editorial rule
Commission availability does not decide the recommendation. Fit, quality, limitations, and value come first. Sponsored placement must be identified and cannot silently replace the editorial pick.
Price rule
Until an approved retailer feed or API supplies current data, Rodfather uses “check current price” links instead of publishing prices that may already be wrong.
